Börte, an historical novel.
"Börte" is a historical drama, based on the play of Dulat Isabekov. It aired in 2021 at the Turkestan Musical Dram Theatre in Kazakistan.
I worked on the project, directed by Davide Livermore, in collaboration with
Blending Pixels. for D-Wok, with the role of 3d Artist.

I created some of the video content which was displayed on a 14mt x 8mt Led Wall.

For this project, I used Houdini for 3d modeling/simulation, Photoshop and Substance Painter/Designer for texturing, Redshift for rendering, and a bit of After Effects for some basic compositing.
-
The idea for these scenes, also inspired by the work of artist Irina Nalyvaiko, was to represent them as environments made of cloth. The Vellum Brush worked well for this task; breaking down the scene into different planes and low/high details made the scene more manageable, giving the possibility to use real Kazakistan landscapes as a reference to give back the right mood to the play.
-
For the weaving scene, the solution was to create the carpet shape, scatter it above the terrain, and let it fall with a simple vellum cloth simulation.
The scene was then composited in After Effects, creating the carpets with an Ink reveal effect.
-
As for the materials and texture, the various fabric patterns were created using Substance Designer, Painter, and Photoshop.
-
The dragon banner was more of an "old school" workflow. I drew some alphas in Photoshop and used them in Substance Painter to create the textures, which were applied to a pretty basic Vellum Simulation.
-
This project also required some standard 3d content. The yurt was entirely modeled with Houdini in a procedural workflow; using a bit of Vex and Copy Stamping to randomize some shapes, to get rid of the "too much perfect" 3d look.
