This is a collection of nighttime photography of scenes that capture my attention in places that I am familiar with. I decided to photograph scenes at night because it allowed there to be flexibility in location, time, and subject. The photos were taken in multiple locations in central Pennsylvania. Viewers need to take the time to appreciate what stories and feelings these photos have to offer. At face value, it is an intriguing picture of illuminated and well-lit places but looking a little longer allows the eye to travel and minds to wander deeper into the photograph to question the subject at hand. While I was photographing in a dark location, my subject was illuminated by a light source that would draw me in. While it never illuminated the entire photograph, it allowed for me to be pushed back while drawing the eye in on the subject at hand. These photographs are a cohesive collection of multiple stories working together to make a viewer wonder while also having a sense of my familiarity with the locations. I learned how photographs can be different but communicate together in such a way that makes them feel like they’re from the same family, even when viewers are wondering why something is the way it is. I started with photographs that varied from doors, windows, businesses, and streets, but then, I ended up with photos of places and scenes that were illuminated with light, being the source of my interest. Even though photographing by myself at night put me in an uncomfortable situation, these photographs are examples of my comfort and perspective of the areas that have surrounded me my entire life and how I am seeing them in a different light.
