Game-based Microworld - Sky: Children of Light

Take Wing at Daylight Prairie
An Introductory Microworld for Sky: Children of Light
Sky: Children of Light is an open-world social indie adventure game developed and published by the studio known for their games Flow, Flower, and Journey, Thatgamecompany. In the game, players are given a cape that allows them to fly and explore the ruins of a once-thriving kingdom. They glide through hazy, dreamy spaces, collaborating on puzzles and mingling inside a magical world. While solo gaming is feasible, Sky genuinely shines when players communicate and cooperate.
The world of Sky has seven distinct realms, each with its own theme representing a stage of life and a wide array of various areas up for scrutiny. With soft fluffy clouds and just one reckless flight, the realm Daylight Prairie reminds us of our own childhood memories, where there are only happy memories and no care for the world. Although already set in stone, I chose to depart from the concept of childhood. Since we were tasked to make a microworld of our chosen game, I thought it was better for me to develop a more general concept that represented the whole game itself. So rather than displaying the qualities of the realm on one big island atop a sea of fluffy clouds, I chose to composite a bunch of elements using one iconic section of the realm as my basis. I chose this “biome” because Daylight Prairie is the only realm whose opening quote never plays again. The said quote goes like this: “Ring the bell towers and reveal your path.” I thought the passage says a lot about what type of game Sky is. One look is all you’ll need to know that adventure is everywhere. Sky urges you to explore, to tread on lightfoot, and see for yourself what’s beyond. Consequently, I thought the bell tower biome of Daylight Prairie communicates this sentiment the best, especially with its vast and varying terrains, cloud formations, magical secrets, and seemingly set path up ahead.
