Book Design | Paul Rand: The Idealist/Realist

Paul Rand: The Idealist/Realist was the first exhibition to honor Rand's work and legacy in the Middle East. The event comprised an exhibition and a symposium that were held at The American University in Cairo (AUC), and design workshops that were held at AUC Tahrir Cultural Center.

AUC published a bilingual book with contributions by art critics and Rand's assistants, friends and students. The book is separated into 2 main sections: one section includes retrospective articles as well as Rand's work, and the other section is dedicated to the symposium. Hence, the reader can open the book from one side to read the articles and see Rand's work, and then turn and flip to the other side of the book to read the section dedicated to the conference.
The book has 2 different book covers: one cover (right) is for the retrospective section, and another rotated cover (left) is for the symposium section. This way, both sections are separate from one another, and each section can be read from left to right.
The spread above marks the end of the retrospective section, and all the pages after it are rotated. Therefore, the reader flips the book to the other side in order to read the symposium section from left to right.
