Kids Programs at the American Repertory Theater

Active board member RoAnn Costin has held several nonprofit and for-profit board positions over the years. In recognition of her contributions, RoAnn Costin, a managing director of Wilderness Point Investments, received the 2017 Angel Award from the American Repertory Theater (ART). She also serves on the board of trustees for the Massachusetts-based organization.

Located at Harvard University, ART expands the boundaries of theater via audience inclusion, research into theatrical experiences, and engagement. Fueled by its belief that theatre can heal the heart, mind, and body, ART maintains several educational engagement programs, including kids and family programs. The organization finds that creativity and teamwork among children let them develop into engaged citizens and maintains five children’s programs for all ages.

The youngest group, ART Pipsqueaks, is for children between the ages of three and four. Lasting for four weeks, the program teaches young artists about exploring stories with music and movement. It fosters fun and relaxed environment that introduces young students to theater.

For students between the ages of five and seven, the organization has its ART Kids Company, Jr. program. This classic playmaking program centers each week around a theme. It has a children’s storybook that relates to this theme and includes creative play techniques and improv games where students act out the story.

Advanced students between the ages of eight and 10 are welcome in the ART Kids Company program. These students demonstrate strong writing, reading, and teamwork skills. An upcoming ART production inspires a new play created and performed by students in this class.

Finally, there are the ART Young Company and ART Teen Company programs. These programs respectively serve students between the ages of 11 and 13 and 14 to 16. Both programs build upon the organization’s core curriculum of teamwork, writing, and ensemble-building.
