My inspiration for this work is the bond between me and my boyfriend through anime and manga. We often talk about which anime has the best opening and which sparks nostalgia, which often times become full fledged debates since we feel strongly about the ones we’re bias too, criticising each other’s taste in anime. I chose the anime opening of ‘Tokyo Mew Mew’ to represent me in those discussions with him and the first opening of ‘Gundam Seed’ for him. These two anime were our first anime experience as kids respectively.
The process of editing this video was as fun as the couples quarrel we have about anime. I feel like we can have a laugh and that is what I cherish in our relationship. By swapping the audio between these two openings, it shows not only how we were different as children, but how similar we now are by sharing the chuunibyou (中二病) aspects of our lives, through matching fight scenes and the hero aspect in both openings by looping, playing with the lyrics and recreating a new anime of some kind.
Below are lyrics of the mashup, which highlights how this sort of editing method really recreates a new narrative. Mecha anime + Magical girl anime = couples longing for each other. Coincidentally, it really hints at a blooming love.
