LIVING WITH PLASTIC

                LIVING WITH PLASTIC
Installations made of discarded plastic to increase its value
The issue of plastic disposal is not a new one. Yet even though people are becoming conscious about their environment and making choices for the future of the planet, plastic is unavoidable.
It is cheap and easily available reducing its value in modern society.
It litters our streets, the air and the ocean. The flip side of plastic is its toxic nature. Its value lies in the damage it does to our country and in turn, the world.
Questioning the disposal of every piece of plastic that comes our way will help us choose better disposal methods and alternative solutions to plastic

Using plastic waste as physical reminders of our massive consumption of plastic would help people become more conscious about littering in public spaces.

My final concepts involve the three piece series of installations under "Living with plastic"
Each piece has a unique message with underlying themes. They have their respective signboards to address the issue directly and create engagement among the viewer and the artist. It also links you to the virtual space where footage of its creation can be viewed.

Intent:
To increase the value of plastic and in turn the value in its disposal.
THE CREATION VIDEO:
Ideation:
Plastic is used extensively in packaging, toys and other essentials due to its cheap and durable nature. This characteristic of plastic also becomes its biggest curse as its low monetary value allows people to discard it with ease and its durability prevents it from biodegrading
It harms our soil, water and air from the moment it is created to the moment it is discarded or burnt.
1.  PLAYING WITH PLASTIC
Plastic is an easily moldable substance to make cheap toys. Yet these toys  are highly toxic not only to children but also to the environment after its disposal.
Even the Plastic packaging that they are shipped in are detrimental to the land we live on.
By becoming more conscious about our consumption of plastic we can be more careful with its disposal and choose alternative options to plastic.
First Installation:
2.  SWIMMING WITH PLASTIC
Single use plastic bottles are a waste of natural resources and cause significant damage to the environment.
Our oceans are filled with plastic that have proven to be extremely harmful to marine life.
The cheap and convenient single use beverage that we buy from the store has value even after consumption. The proper disposal and boycott of single use bottles would become highly valuable to our aquatic life.
Second Installation:
3.  GROWING WITH PLASTIC
Due to the flexible nature of plastic it becomes a cheap form of packaging for food companies. Especially on the go products like cup noodles, yogurt and even candy wrappers are packaged in light weight plastic.
Food that is ordered online and delivered are also packaged in light plastic as it is a cheap alternative to higher grade material that cannot be disposed off as easily.
Incineration of plastic waste may seem like an easy form of disposal but releases extremely harmful toxins into the air.
The consequences of cheap and easy plastic disposal is simply not worth it
Third Installation:
VIDEO:

A public art installation can only impact those that see it if they happen to be there.
In a digital world where the reach is infinite, social media can be a great medium to spread the same message.
The use of videography to capture the creation and final message of the installations will help in spreading the idea and create more engagement.

I used two songs for the video:

DECEPTACON by Le Tigre
EARTH by Easy Life

The entire video was shot on the iPhone 6 and edited using Premiere pro and After effects.
