Typographic postcards
Quotes of famous graphic designers (University project for the 'Typographic design applications II' subject)
We were given four quotes of famous graphic designers. The purpose of the project
was to create four typographic postcards based on these quotes. My design is an attempt
to express the conceptual meaning behind the quote visually using typography.
Quote #1
"Good design goes to heaven; bad design goes everywhee." -Mieke Gerritzen

Quote Analysis
The keywords of this quote were the words 'Heaven' and 'Everywhere'. I associated them as being opposites to each other thus; Heaven (good) VS Everywhere (bad)=> Good VS Bad design. 'Good' design goes directly to 'Paradise' and is 'accepted' as 'good design'. On the other hand, 'bad design', if used properly, can go to another level, beyond 'Paradise'. Thus, 'bad design' in this case doesn't have a negative aspect as Mieke's own style is considered to be 'Bad design' itself.

This postcard is inspired by Brutal design as it uses 'bad design' on purpose.

Quote #2
"Design is everything. Everything!"-Paul Rand

Quote Analysis
The word 'Design' itself is considered a conceptual activity that involves shaping an idea that develops into a visible form or is put into action. The design process always starts with an idea. However, the origin of the idea is not always absolute, since every designer can be inspired by anything. In conclusion, 'design is everything' because it is everywhere in people's daily lives.

This postcard was inspired by Paul Rand's style.

Quote #3
"The meaning is in the content of the text and not in the typeface,
and that is why we loved Helvetica very much."- Wim Crouwel

Quote Analysis
Helvetica is considered a 'neutral font'. When used, it doesn't change the meaning of any sentence. In fact, the purpose of a sentence is to focus on its content and not on the font. Thus, using a 'neutral font' which challenges experimentation and creativity regarding layout constraint experimentation and creativity, a solution can be found.

This postcard was inspired by Swiss design thus, to present the meaning of the sentence I used a grid and a layout.
