What If
Post - everyday moments : New hybrid spaces between the physical and digital realm

Academic Year 5

Supervisor: Evelyn Gavrilou
“Post-everyday life” is about exploring new ways of living, in the modern technological age. The main interest of the research is the infosphere: the invisible system of data that surrounds us and is created by any kind of digital system (construction, device). Our digital lives depend on these very "phygital" systems for communication, observation and navigation.
We, as a group, were interested in the “ Architecture of the domestic objects” and in the need to redefine the proximity of the hearth that has almost disappeared  in the modern domestic way of life.
RESEARCH - VISUALIZATION

 Rooftops

Rooftops in greece's residential buildings form a whole digital field of technological objects, such as antennas, solar water heaters, ventilators, etc. That is why they were the next field of research.
 EMF - Photography

This is how the infosphere was visualized on the scale of the apartment building and it's the last visualisation technique that was used. Warmer colors (red) indicate stronger WiFi signal and cooler tones indicate a weaker WiFi signal.

(Use of low shutter speed photography and coding.)

Post - Furniture Design
Based on the concept of post-furniture, after the research, pairs of digital and physical domestic objects were created, based on narratives of close to us people
(families, students). The form of the narratives stepped on the example of the book “Specie of spaces”, by George Perec.
The naming of the furniture was developed  based on three factors: the subject of the narrative, the digital object, but also its physical "assistant". Thus, each post-furniture acquires its own, unique code.

DESIGN METHODOLOGY
By placing the subjects of the narratives in the apartment building of study, in which we live, we questioned the meaning of public and private space, the re-experience of the common part and the maintenance of the digital self.
Design
(floor plans , isometric drawings)

Design was made for the purpose of placing the furniture, but also the post-furniture around the core, depending on their use and digitality. Digital furniture are located at a smaller distance from the core and offer the subject a digital experience, either individual or collective. Physical furniture are placed far from the core, thus providing privacy. Going from the first to the fifth floor, there is a gradation of the collective spaces, both around the core, and between the apartments. The separation of furniture is done with “ Γ " - shaped walls, which, depending on their torsion and material, allow or limit contact with the digital cloud. Α resident may use a post-piece of furniture and be close to what seems familiar to him (the digital core), while another may want to live moments of idyll a little further along, having a limit towards it.

Apartment typologies

In an effort to create the new typologies after the de-apartmentization that takes place in the new structure, the new living spaces were organised, based on the number of people who cohabitate.

Augmented Reality - The new structure in the cityscape

The visitor/resident of the building arrives through the digital core in the rooftop, to a phygital field. They can, through augmented reality, modify the world around them, by creating digital objects to habitat the known landscape, using mobile phones or VR systems.

These structures could, in the long term, be multiplied in the city of Volos and in that way, create a new network of socialization and interaction of the modern subject.
