ASME - Global Development Review

Challenge – The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) launched a new and unique publication in 2013, dedicated to the ASME Global Development Review (AGDR). AGDR focuses on helping meet the needs of individuals and organizations working at the intersection of technology and global development. The design for the new publication would need to translate across print and digital platforms, as ASME was interested in launching a digital version of the publication using Adobe Digital Publishing Suite.

Solution – Bates Creative worked with ASME to develop a name and to help define a content strategy for the publication. DEMAND was chosen for the name as it reflects the industry’s demand for more involvement from mechanical engineers to help develop and deliver appropriate, technology-based solutions to benefit the environment, public health and infrastructure. The print design uses only one color, one typeface and no photography – deliberate decisions made to mirror how engineers are working to do more with less around the world. After the print design was finalized, Bates Creative evolved the publication into a tablet app using Adobe Digital Publishing Suite, giving ASME the opportunity to reach a wider audience. Interactive elements and other digital assets were added to the digital publication to inspire users to engage and interact with the content. The app enables users to share AGDR case studies to help promote the mission of the ASME Global Development Review.
