Major Project Personal Shopping Trolley

Technical Drawings
Process From The Beginning of The Project To The Finish
Evaluating the cheapest personal shopping trolley (£30) with four wheels. This example was hard to use as when the trolley was loaded with heavy items it was extremely difficult to turn around corners. The frame was made from steel which meant when used in wet conditions over a long duration, it would start to rust from the inside as there was no plastic cap preventing water going inside the frame.
Evaluating the most popular personal shopping trolley sold in the UK (£50). The frame of this trolley was plated steel which creates a resistant layer from rust and corrosion which increases the life expectancy of the trolley. Having six wheels compared to four wheels made the trolley much easier to navigate around tight corners. When it came to the redesign my version of the personal shopping trolley I chose six wheels as it would increase the practicality.
Looking at the forms of pushchairs which will influence the form of my design.
Observing users operating the trolley, the loading and unloading items out of the storage compartment required both users to bend their backs horizontal to increase their reach.
Initial sketches using drawers which offers the user an option of where to place items, the heavier items can be located on the lower drawer and lighter smaller items placed inside the top drawer, this prevents any delicate items being squashed by heavier items.
Further experimentation of the chosen design.
1:1 scale cardboard model of the design for the personal shopping trolley. The aim of this model was to see the proportions and the ergonomics.
Simulating loading and unloading of the storage compartments.
The main area of my brief was having an area to place the shopping basket on, the photos show the basket fits onto the frame.
Testing the foldability of the frame, this was an issue and was resolved through CAD development.
Sketches showing a different design of the rear hatch for the storage compartments, using one panel to open and close the compartments will make it easier to load items inside the trolley.
CAD Development
1:1 Scale Test Rig of The Folding Mechanism
The slot which locates the spring loaded mechanism was 4mm in depth which meant that the pin made the frame very unstable. To overcome this error in the design I drilled a hole in the bracket which insured that the pin would go through the bracket which improved the stability which ensures the strength of the frame would not deteriorate over the years.
