L Jay Mitchell's profile

Developing Meaningful Relationships to Achieve Emotiona

Possessing decades of experience in guiding therapeutic boarding schools, L. Jay Mitchell is the founder and owner of the Greenbrier Academy for Girls. The West Virginia institution combines quality academics and nurturing therapeutic care for teens with emotional disorders. At Greenbrier, students ranging in age from 13 to 18 benefit from caring counselors trained in an “applied relationality” therapeutic treatment model, which L. Jay Mitchell co-developed.

Offering an immersive environment amid rolling hills, Greenbrier encourages girls to develop a sense of community that places an emphasis on meaningful relationships with others. Schedules center on activities that provide a relational experience and include high-adventure learning and wilderness weeks, as well as equine therapy and drumming circles. Reinforcing the continuum of care, each staff member is trained in and actively models a relational philosophy that is integrated with daily activities.

This integration is woven throughout planned events and casual interactions, as well as household chores, group therapy sessions, and the academic classroom. The end result is that relationship-based principles of therapeutic and fundamental change are imbued internally and externally in ways that apply to the full range of daily actions. Philosophical theory blends seamlessly with practical application in defining Greenbrier’s positive, healing, community-oriented culture.
