The Silo of the Ludwig's mill is located near the two largest transport hubs in Bratislava. The Silo belonged to the larger area of Ludwig's mill, in which very few original buildings have been preserved. However, this area offers a relatively cozy atmosphere.
My design was influenced directly from the atmosphere of the whole area with a strong industrial character, which I tried to unify and add a new function to the unused Silo, which has been abandoned for many decades. With my new functional content, I responded to the unique spaces of cylindrical, reinforced concrete tubes, originally intended for grain storage, and I proposed the feature of an industrial hotel with other associated functions. I tried to preserve as much as possible from the original expression of the unique tube form with minimal exterior interventions.
I supplemented the original 11 silo tubes with another 3, which are identical in terms of form, but different in terms of materiality, as they are made of a partially transparent material. These three new tubes were created on the site of the former control part of the silo, and have a clear functional content - they ensure safe and comfortable vertical transportation within the hotel. When designing this silo conversion, I had to take into account the common parts of the hotel services into a non-traditional circular layout, which also did not offer much spaciousness in terms of horizontality of the building, but on the contrary, the verticality of this silo allowed a logical arrangement of the layout.
