Social Sandbox - Exponat

The rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer - the distribution of goods in Europe has long ceased to be a fair matter. The gap between rich and poor is widening with at frightening speed. But what about the children of Europe in particular? What position do they take within this socio-economic change and how many are threatened by poverty and social exclusion?

In cooperation with the Bertelsmann Foundation, we developed an exhibition object based on their “Social Justice Index”. The data driven installation deals with this particular issue of child poverty in Europe and deliberately places this issue in a provocative public discourse.

The sand box is basically the grown-up interpretation of a sandpit. Each of the 28 sand molds represents a country in Europe. The volume and height correspond to the absolute and relative number of children affected by poverty in the respective country. The amount of sand in the box corresponds to the total number of children living in poverty across Europe. In a playful and provocative way, the viewer receives tangible insights into the conditions of child poverty in Europe.

The social sandbox was shown at numerous exhibitions and published in the youngster category of the Page Magazin.
