Letterpress Booklet
Students were tasked with expanding their knowledge of contemporary letterpress printers and the visual aesthetic of a particular printer or shop. We created a multi-page book and manipulated master pages to export a print that is press-ready. Students used their prior knowledge of InDesign grids, hierarchy, and typography to create the final piece. The final booklet is A5 size in inches: 5.83 x 8.27 in. front and back cover, 7 spreads, and 16 total pages.
I was assigned the letterpress print shop Signal-Return which is located in Detroit, Michigan. My process of creating this booklet started with researching the print shop and gathering important information. I used Signal-Return's social media and website to find color schemes and typography used by the company.
After finding all of the important information, I started creating my 3 master page layouts that I will use throughout the booklet.
I created the final booklet by using the master page layouts to ensure the pages are cohesive. In addition, I edited the images to complement each other and used typography that matched the aesthetic of the print shop. I applied the mustard color of the Signal-Return logo on most of the pages. In order to make the booklet more personal, we added handprinted elements throughout the booklet. I used wood strips and ink to create marks to illustrate the many wooden elements and colors that Signal-Return has in their shop. My final booklet effectively informs the viewer about the shop, as well as successfully creates visual language that matches the aesthetic of the shop.
Finally, I transferred the finalized pages to mockups to display how the printed booklet would look like. In addition, we had the option to choose an appropriate background for our booklet mockups.
