The (non) Place
. . .
Illustration personal project which won the "APIM Young Talents Award" in 2019
I developed a series of six illustrations exploring the anthropological concept of "non-place".
This term is used to describe spaces of transience and impermanence, where there are not human relations and the individual remains anonymous and solitary. Examples of this kind of spaces are roads, customs, means of transport, waiting areas like airports or platforms, shopping malls, gas stations, hotels, etc.
Conversely, "places" are spaces where people remain, meeting and relating to each other and strengthening their identities.
However, considering a space a place or a none-place is subjective. It depends on the perception of each individual.
This subjectivity was the focus of my project. I wanted the viewer to wonder if the illustration sceneries were places or non-places given the behaviour and relationships between the characters.
