ADVE2291 Design Lab 1: Project 5 Expressive type design
This project required deliverables of hand-drawn lettering, supporting graphics, and 3D rendered mock-ups of a fake product. The lettering was to be the name of the creation, the graphics were packaging design elements, and the mock-ups were the final version of the "product." Adobe Illustrator was used to create the type & drawings and Adobe Dimension was used to create the mock-ups. Adobe Photoshop was also an option to retouch photos but the images I chose did not need it. I had never heard of Dimension before this project so the program was entirely new to me. Although I have used Illustrator many times before this project introduced me to new things, such as Recolor Artwork and Symbol Sprayer. I also learned of Content Aware Fill in Photoshop.
Visual Exploration moodboards
I chose the word "zephyr"—a gentle breeze—so I wanted my project to focus on nature and being organic. I was inspired by the "cottagecore" trend that is popular now.
Mind Map Planning
I created a mind map to both come up with and narrow down ideas for my product.
Sketches
I sketched out possible type variations for my product name. I also sketched support graphics for my word, focusing on leaves and flowers.
Using the Pen tool in Adobe Illustrator to create expressive type design from my draft.
Still using the Pen tool, I digitalized some of the flowers to use as support graphics.
I created a color palette using inspiration from my moodboard, then used Illustrator's Recolor Artwork feature to create different versions of my palette.
I used my color palette to begin filling in my word and drawings.
After feedback from my professor, I changed my support drawings to just be leaves rather than stems/flowers. Here I am using the Pen tool to trace them again.
My old drawings next to the ones I chose to use for the project. I also tweaked the word a little—I made the "h" slightly less indented.
Here I tried to determine how I wanted my label to look. I went with the design on the right.
I downloaded a model off of Adobe Stock that I thought looked more like a candle than the default designs available on Dimension. I uploaded my Illustrator files and positioned them as pictured on the 3D model. I then changed the lighting effect settings until I was content.
Final Presentation Board
Here are my completed label, pattern, and 3D rendered product mock-ups.
