What  it is:
Marked by the use of robust technology such as steam machines, it is reflective of the pre-digital technological explosion. Machinery used is commonly more advanced than the current technology. Despite several works of this genre being published between the 1960’s and 1970’s, the term “Steampunk”was originated in the late 80’s. 

Main Features:
Woodwork, copper and bronze, and the general use of gears, in addition to the use of Victorian clothing.

What  it is:
Occurs generally in a period of a high level of industrial development. It often includes a military theme and the existence of huge diesel-powered machines.


Main features:
Retro-futuristic subgender of fiction with vehicles and machines powered by diesel fuel. This was very common in  sci-fi stories of the 1930’s and 1940’s time frame between wars. Predominant music style was jazz.

What it is:
Known as Atompunk or Raypunk, this genre occurs between the 1950’s and 1970’s. During this era, the optimism of the first space travel and the American dream was counterbalanced with the fear of a nuclear war between the USA and USSR. 

Main features:
Clothes and buildings are silver and shiny. Art decco aesthetics and an emphasis to costumes, spaceships, flying cars and space travel.

What  it is: Designation of an Sci-fi literary movement that emerged in United States and Europe in the beginning of the 80’s.
The narrative is centered on the struggle between man and machine in a socio-cultural environment corrupted by high technology and 
corporatism.
The dominant system in general is represented by an oppressor government, commercial corporations, or fundamentalist religions.

Main FEATURES: Socio-economic dystopic scenario and use of neon colors.
The rich part of the city has monumental buildings whereas the poor side has ruins and a high level of criminality. The substitution of the biologic body for a robotic body is common to see, where often only the conscience is preserved.

What  it is: 
Fictional speculation that encourages optimistic visions of the future regarding environmental issues such as climate changes and pollution, as well as social inequalities. Solarpunk focuses on renewable energy and technology as a whole. It is often connected to an anarchist socio-political vision.


Main FEATURES: 
The Solarpunk aesthetics uses patterns from nature and it is highly ornamental. It is a reaction against the contemporary aesthetic commonly used on mainstream media. It also has visual and concept inspiration from Art  Noveau.
