Christopher King joined the United States Army in 1992 upon graduating from Kickapoo High School in Springfield, Missouri. He entered the automotive sales field in 1999, shortly after he earned his bachelor’s degree from Southwest Missouri State University. Started in 1905 as a social club for professionals from diverse backgrounds, the Rotary Club soon switched its mission to serving humanitarian causes including promoting education, providing clean water, and fighting disease. By 1921, the club had become truly international, with chapters on six continents, and today the group has 1.2 million members worldwide in 35,000 local clubs. One of Rotary’s greatest achievements was its participation in the global fight against polio.

The first cases of polio in the US were recorded in 1894, and the disease grew to become a major scourge by the mid-20th century. After the development of a vaccine in 1955, cases in the US declined dramatically, but the disease continued to flourish in other countries. Rotary International officially joined the battle in 1979 with a campaign to immunize six million children in the Philippines. The cost of this initial effort was about $760,000. In 1985 Rotary expanded the scope of its fight against polio, as well as its financial commitment, and did so again in 1988.

Thanks to an international effort in which Rotary International played a crucial role, the Americas were declared polio-free in 1994, followed by the Western Pacific region from Australia to China in 2000, and the entire Southeast Asia region in 2014. Rotary International was a major part of the fight, contributing over $1 billion to the cause of immunizing more than 2.5 billion children.
