PROJECT: ENGLISH BISCUIT MANUFACTURER OFFICE

English Biscuit Manufacturers head office - where to begin talking about it? A project so beautiful and so close to my heart. I think it is safe to say that the story starts from the tour of their factory since the only direction we were given by our clients was that the office had to be New York style – white and pristine. Our desire for a deeper design concept led us further and edging towards industrial design.
During the tour of their factory and our design site, which was going to be allocated at the top floor of it, my manager Ahsan Najmi, asked me to note elements that jumped out to me the most. I pointed to the obvious and continuous use of different versions of scaffolding and that immediately became our design concept!
Sitting in the heart of English Biscuit Manufacturer’s factory, located within an Industrial area, the head office was going to derive its design philosophy from Industrial building material. Our concept revolved around a ‘scaffold’ joinery. The details of which were scaled, exploded and morphed. These details became all of our design elements – ceiling, wall, shelving, doors, screens and even storage.
In terms of the layout, the plan was segmented into two portions – 1/3rd at the bottom was allocated to be the private, high-end executive area and the other 2/3rd was going to be the public end and staff area. These two areas were separated by a glistening marble ramp lined with a waterbody and refreshing plants. Pristine, white cube forms not only demarcated different zones/teams but also gave the place a very contemporary Le Corbusier look. While the the green faux grass was deliberately repeated to bring the outdoors in and make the place comfortably healthy.
The office is super dramatic and very cozy. It has an almost dreamy, romantic vibe which is amplified by the use of brass, other metals and the high contrast in colors. Marble, high-end furniture and fancy lighting complement the high stature of EBM and their commitment to staying there. The roof top was reserved as a fitness and entertainment area with a spacious open-to-air dining hall and super sweet prayer area. It’s almost impossible to find such beautiful offices across the globe, let alone in Pakistan.
