ADVE2219 Design Lab 1: Project 3 InDesign Techniques
This project focused on typography and how to correctly utilize Adobe programs to create text-based designs. I created a poster that listed typography guidelines, using InDesign to format the text and Illustrator to make supporting drawings. This project helped me to get a better understanding of the inner workings of InDesign and how to properly use text elements in my work.
Visual Exploration
I looked for typography examples on Google. I was drawn to designs with bold, brightly-colored text and kinetic formatting.
Poster Design Sketch
Here I came up with possible design ideas for my poster and determined what I would use as my supporting illustrations—X-heights and italicization.
Progress Screenshots
Formatting the initial guideline copy text by creating margins & gutters within the text box.
I added a Pantone spot color into my swatches, then began to create different paragraph styles to differentiate the body text from subheadings.
I made sure there were no misspellings present in the text and started to edit my paragraph style until the text fit more evenly between the margins.
I tried out different font pairings on FontJoy.com to see what looked best to me.
Eventually, I decided to use the font family Roc Grotesk because of the many different weight options available.
For the background of my poster, I layered a white rectangle over another rectangle using my Pantone swatch. To make it easier to create a balanced design, I added guides I could line my texts boxes up with. I then imported my Illustrator drawings and fit them in under their respective paragraphs.
Final Product
This my final poster, placed onto a black presentation board for emphasis.
