MIMI

Mimi is a project of a minimalistic stool. It is made out of beautiful ash wood, which is one of the most suitable ones for furniture making. This type of wood grows and is available locally in Poland.

The seat is circular, and its diameter is 295mm. I decided to construct the seating using a relatively thin (16mm) board and add beams underneath. The beams are connected to each other with a halved joint and are glued to the seat. Underneath the seat I milled a 3 mm deep groove that enabled precise positioning of the beams and enlarged the gluing area. Adding beams ensured a stable connection for the legs. The joint that is used for the legs is a mortise and tennon with wedges that block the connection. It is a traditional method of joining wood that  I very much like. The legs have been done on a lathe and are positioned at a 5 degree angle.

Mimi stool is a simple and elegant piece of furniture. It balances thick and thin material interesting appearance and a stable construction. It is solid and durable.

The surface has been finished with OSMO hard wax oil.
Piece of furniture like this can last a lifetime and ages with dignity.

I want my designs to carry the responsibility for for the environment, human health and future generations. That's why I love working with wood. It is a renewable resource, it stores carbon dioxide. It does not produce harmful waste (waste coming from my work ends up in a fireplace producing heat). Well done solid wood furniture can last for a very long time and is reparable. This contributes to using less wood material in our lifetime.

The project was made in the workshop at School of Form in Poznań, Poland.
