These images were made for a National Geographic Society book about the Caribbean. In 2011 I spent three months island hopping north through the 2000 mile long archipelago of Caribbean Islands. My personal project "Small Places" grew out of this assignment. The West Indian social and physical landscapes have many faces. Sadly one of these faces is the tragic history of environmental and human exploitation, the effects of which are still felt by the majority of people who are currently native to the islands. However, much wildness remains intact throughout the West Indies, providing a constant backdrop of astounding natural beauty both on land and in sea.
