Affording Your MIT Education
MIT Student Financial Services

MIT is one of only five colleges in the U.S. that practices need-blind admissions and meets the full need for all of its undergraduate students—both domestic and international. Roughly 6 out of every 10 students receive MIT need-based aid, and the average cost to attend MIT for a student receiving financial aid in 2018 was $22,647—approximately what it costs to attend a state school. For students with family incomes under $90,000 a year, MIT ensures that scholarship funding will allow them to attend tuition-free.

To highlight MIT’s commitment to affordability and to outline basic financial aid deadlines and procedures, MIT commissioned me to design a flagship piece for newly admitted undergraduate students and their families. Affording Your MIT Education—AYME, for short—is designed in spreads as a print piece, and has been adapted as an interactive PDF for use in email.

Simple infographics call out key affordability facts and figures. Charts and tables are designed for maximum clarity, while adhering to strict MIT brand standards.

At the end of the day, AYME is a financial document, so typography is king. Page titles set in Canela by Commercial Type offer a contemporary interpretation on a classic serif—ideal for setting the publication’s tone as an approachable and trusted financial guidebook. Body copy and headers are set in Messina Sans by Luzi Type, offering high legibility in both print and digital applications, though never sacrificing style.
